Building an enclosed patio is one of the best ways to increase your home’s value and provide you and your family with an outdoor entertaining space for friends and family. However, when it comes to building an enclosed patio, there are many different styles to choose from. Keep reading below to learn more about the different styles of enclosed patios available.
Screened-In Porch
One of the most basic enclosed-porch designs is to build a screened-in porch. Generally, homeowners choose to install these at the front of the home, surrounding a small porch area with screened windows. They will keep pests harsh weather out of the space, while still allowing a breeze to circulate and allowing you to enjoy the fresh air.
Three & Four Seasons Rooms
Two of the most common kinds of enclosed patios that are constructed are three or four season rooms. These rooms function much like a sunroom, with plenty of windows and patio doors that allow lots of natural light into the room. However, there are major differences between a three and four season room.
In a three season room, single or double-pane glass windows are installed, and perhaps a fan to promote ventilation and air movement, but the room itself is not meant to be constantly climate controlled, and it is not fitted with the necessary heating capabilities to be used during the winter months.
A four season room, as you may have guessed, is a completely climate-controlled room, that while fitted with numerous skylights and windows, is able to be used even in the dead of winter. It is essential to install double-pane glass at minimum, with insulated glass as the ideal option. The finishing touch that you will need to install to complete the room is adding a heating & cooling system that allows the room to be inhabitable year-round.
Solarium
Finally, we have arrived at the rarest style of enclosed patio, a solarium. A solarium is a room that is constructed, from ceiling to floor, with windows. A solarium provides you the opportunity to sunbathe indoors, and even enjoy a fantastic view of the constellations at night. While they are harder to climate control than a three or four season room due to the fact that the walls are entirely made of glass, they can still be heated to enjoy year-round, although you may be better off waiting until the warmer months to use it.
