Fall Home Maintenance

Fall leaves in a gutter

Now that fall has arrived in Massachusetts, it is important to ensure that your home is ready to withstand the cooler months. When it comes to fall home maintenance, there are a number of different areas that need to be attended to. Let’s take a look at a few of the most important ones here:

Clean Your Gutters

Every homeowner’s favorite job; cleaning the gutters. While it may be a dirty, thankless job, cleaning your gutters is incredibly important for the health of your home. Your gutter system serves an incredibly important purpose, protecting your home from water damage. Your gutter system is designed to direct water away from your home and its foundation, but when you have a clogged gutter system, it can end up causing a lot of damage to your home. First of all, if water is flowing over the top of your gutters, it can seep underneath your starter shingles, causing rot damage in your roof deck. However, there are a number of other ways in which clogged gutters can damage your home. In addition to damaging your shingles, the water can also run over the top of your gutter system and rot out the fascia boards that your gutter system is attached too. The water can also overflow onto the flower beds below your home, and potentially even cause water damage to your home’s foundation over time. If you’ve been putting off cleaning your gutter system, the fall is the best time to do so!

Look for Drafts

Another important piece of fall maintenance you should be doing is checking your home for drafts. Your windows are one of the easiest places to lose energy from, as they’re sealed openings to the exterior of your home, which means if the seal isn’t tight, they can easily leak air in and out or your home. Check for any drafts around both your windows and the thresholds of your doors to help limit energy loss. If your windows are leaking, the first thing you can try to do it install weatherstripping around the interior of your home. If you’re unable to reduce the air leakage, it’s sometimes better to replace the entire window unit!
