The DLM Remodeling contractors have been working on window replacements for over 25 years. Our team has experience far and above many of the companies in the area. The window industry is so vast with inexperienced contractors and the results are showing up. When looking for a window replacement contractor or if you take this project on by yourself, you should be aware of some frequent problems that can happen. These fundamental errors could result in water leaks, air drafts, structural failures and more:
- Poor Caulking – Cleaning: Caulk is a general portion of installing windows. This is the stuff which seals everything together and maintains water and air tightness. This material must be extremely sticky to work properly. What we have seen is installers use caulk and apply it to dirty, unclean surfaces, which results in a poor bond.
- Poor Caulking – Tool Use: In order to caulk, most of the time you need to use a proper tool for them to stick. With the proper tools and technique, the result is a pleasing, concave surface. When done improperly, the surface is bumpy and uneven.
- Missing the Trim Seal: Many windows systems consist of the windows themselves plus a series of trim pieces. If these pieces become exposed to the outside, it is extremely important that they are sealed to the window. You can tell that your windows have been properly sealed if you can see caulk squeezing out of where the window and trim meet.
These are three out of many mistakes that we see from past window installations. There are more skilled techniques that we have left off the list, but we hope you get the point. It is just important that you choose a contractor with a good track record and ones that you can trust. For more information on window replacement, we would be happy to talk.
