When it comes to siding materials, none are more popular than vinyl siding, which has been the nation’s premier siding option for decades. Known for it’s durability, longevity, aesthetic appeal and economical price-point, vinyl siding has been a homeowner favorite for good reason. If you’re looking for a low-maintenance material, one that is able to withstand everything that Mother Nature has to throw at it, vinyl siding is a fantastic choice. However, just because it’s low-maintenance, doesn’t mean there isn’t work that needs to be done to keep the siding in good repair! If you’re interested in learning more about what maintenance you should be performing for your home’s siding, keep reading below for more information!
Inspect It
Just as with any other system on your home’s exterior, including your roof & windows, you should be sure to inspect your siding on an annual basis to keep track on any damage. Your siding can show damage in a variety of ways, including rot, mold, mildew & algae, which often appear as dark green, brown or black spots growing on your siding. Furthermore, if water has made it’s way into your siding and is beginning to cause rot damage, it is very likely that you will find bubbling or warping in the siding boards. Finally, its also possible that your siding can become damaged by falling debris or blunt force such as a baseball hitting the boards. Broken siding allows water into your walls, which means it is important to address it before the rot damage has begun!
Clean Your Siding
As we mentioned earlier, its quite possible for your siding to accumulate mold & algae build-up, which can end up causing bigger issues down the line. This means that you will need to remove this build-up by cleaning the system!
There are a few different ways to go about cleaning your siding. For most instances, all you will need is a soft cloth with a bucket of warm water & dish soap or detergent. However, if there is a bit more growth on your siding, and you need a stronger cleaner, you can also make a vinegar or bleach solution, making either solution with water. Be sure to check with your manufacturer to make sure these solutions are safe to use on your siding!
